Is there a metal water pipe around there thats corroded I am only guessing as I have never had anything to do with these.

While a failed head gasket can blow the water systems up, it would normally do so without the the temp raising by much. I would check out the pump, to be sure that the water is circulating once the thermostat is opening, that is if it is opening at all.

If it really is this hot the top and bottom hoses should both be the same temp.

Why don't you take off the air filter? You might see a little better. Underneath you will find hoses to the oil cooler and there are metal coolant pipes there as well and as has been said before that is likely where the issue lies.
