recently i had to turn the steering wheel hard lock several times, as i dove off i heard a groaning sound each time i turned the steering wheel, when looked under the bonnet the steering oil pot was empty and, half way up the engine, on the right hand side, a black rubber tubes appears, it ends further up on the right and is attached by a nut all around this nut it is "oily" and it appears that what ever the substance is, it was expelled under a lot of pressure, i have had the car for 18 years but am not technical, what shall i do?

Hello Walshy,
Sounds like your high pressure pipe from the power steering pump has blown.
Best to fit a new pipe asap to save running the pump dry and having to get a new one (approx £15 as opposed to £400).
Cheers,
Jaz

Agreed, but get the new pipe from a hydraulic specialist as it'll be a fraction of the cost of the MB one and if you want you can smarten the engine bay up with a shiney ss braided hose (aircraft quality) usually still less than dealer prices.

(when you remove the old one make sure you keep the whole area clean as any dirt in the PS fluid is poison to the system. Also, blow out new pipe with an airline just in case there is any dirt in that.)
