Hi everybody from sunny France.

I have a 1986 300 sl all running well but have a very high fuel consumption like 15 to the gallon or less with normal driving.......smell of petrol in car and strong in the boot!!!!!!!!

Can not see any leaks but the exhaust is very black.....any ideas its costing a lot!!!!!!

Thanks in advance

whats the idle speed like

at cold, then at full operating temp. It shouldn't be going above about 1000rpm cold fully rich and should settlr down to abot 650-700 when fully warmed up.

It does sound like it's over fuelling. Check the air filter to see if it's clogged ( simplest things first), see if the throttle body looks dirty or greasy or caked in dirt. Then get wiggy and start on the fule injectors and relays and the like.
