I brought a 1988 300ce a month or so ago and have been enjoying ownership, But, now i have a haynes manual in my hand, the engine looks wrong, and everything is in the wrong place! The Engine looks like a 190 2.6 lump, not a 3.0 (That the V5 says it is) Any ideas on what could of happened, or is this normally for the early 12v 300ce's

Best to find the engine number. This will tell you accurately, what kind of engine you have and if its the one that should be in the car. I think (not sure on this model) that the engine number is located on a horizontal surface, on the top front of the engine block, on the left hand side (ie passenger side if its RHD). It could require a lot of searching and/or rubbing surfaces to clean it up, it doesn't really jump out at you. Obviously its not much use going off the V5. Once you have the engine number, I'm sure if you post it on here (or even just the first 6 digits) someone will be able to say 100% where it came from.

The 2.6 and 3 litre 12 valve engines are virtually identical, are you perhaps looking at a manual that covers the later 24v unit from 1990 onwards?

Well, I will search for the engine number during my day of tomorrow (sunday), as i have had no luck finding it in the dark! I do hope it is the orginal engine, and not a replacment... Thankyou for your response, i am sure i will post here again! One more question... does anyone know a good place to get my old MB serviced arround Swansea?

That's a 6-cylinder 12-valve W124 engine. Ignore the Haynes manual. The 24-valve engine looks completely different - maybe they pictured that

IMHO the Haynes manauls for the W124 are crap. In particular the wiring diagrams are hopeless
