Hi there

1990 300ce (185k) suffers badly from erratic idle, varying from 1500-stalling at any time, and very unpredicatable. Sometimes when blipping throttle, as it returns to idle it will rev up again several times to 1000-1500 rpm. Car is completely fine whilst driving normally under throttle but as soon as it gets to idle revs it's anybody's guess! The main problem with this is when 'coasting' round tight corners, or turning in it sometimes stalls resulting in steering and braking suddenly going very heavy which is rather awkward to say the least, sometimes scary.

Cheers

i have had similar problems with the 103 engine and it always seems to be the air slide control valve you need to remove the air filter and its located just below it at the front edge it has a 2 pin plug going into it. and at the back an air pipe in and one going out.while its idling erratically then remove the plug if it then settles down thats the problem

Is that in front of the fuel distributor, near the fuel pressure regulator?
