I know there has been several posts regarding the 5speed gearbox on the W124 300ce24v model.

My problem is that when cold the gearbox will not engage reverse, except after about 2-3mins after the engine has been started.

Once engaged it seems to work fine and the gearbox changes smoothly into all gears. (There is no nasty thumps or bangs).

Does anyone have any suggestions why this may be?

The gearbox oil was changed recently and I cannot see any sign of leakages.

Thanks in advance.

I'm just curious as to whether the problem was there BEFORE the tranny oil change or has it occured AFTER the oil change?..........if AFTER it could be that the filter in the oil pan is not fitted correctly, or been dislodged, and the oil is not being 'picked up' as efficiently as it should.

Me too - same box in 300TE-24... help please?

And my filter and trans fluid were changed slightly over a year ago, so they are good but I am sure not contributing.

All I had exactly the same problem.

The five speed box is a pain in the butt.

Although my forward gears were fine, the reverse was a problem engaging.

I had the box stripped down and it turned out to be worn clutches and therefore the gearbox would loose pressure therefore reverse no engaging properly.

I say your gearbox needs a rebuild, 5 speed are not easy to rebuild, as the
5th gear is at the back of the box, a bad design.

Has anyone ever had a problem with the seperate ECU that runs this gearbox? gives problem when changing into 5th
