Hello,
There is information on the 124 car stereo wiring within the Haynes manual, chapter 12, part 25.

Unfortunately, when I replaced my original head unit, the wiring colours indicated in the Haynes manual did not do what they were meant to -colours were incorrect. Had to use a multi meter to diagnose what did what!

You will probably need to chop the existing head unit connector off, and wire in a "standard" head unit connector (forgot the proper name for it)- this should then plug into the connector on your new head unit (or any future replacement one). The wires you need to find are a Ground (think this is as it says in Haynes: Brown), a Permanent Power, an Ignition Power, an Arial Signal and finally Illumination (Note this is not dimmed- it just lights the lights!). Please, if you are not sure what you are doing, don?t mess around with the wiring. The Speaker wires you can work out.

Would love to pull my head unit out to confirm all this, but have misplaced the keys to do it (and its a real pain in the bum to get all that wiring back in), sorry.

Good luck
O

Over here we have adapting kits you can plug between the original loom and the "standard" radio. Its not expensive at all and it provides for a much cleaner job (no cutting of the precious standard loom). I imagine any audio related shop should be able to sell you one of those.

Hello,

What made of head unit is it?
I think you could try Halford and also the manufacturer of the unit, see whether they have any adapater kits, for the existing wire and the head unit...

I totally agree that, if u not sure which is which, don't cut it!!!

hope this can help...

Gary!

Unfortunately, the wiring loom for the radio in this vintage 124 is not convertable -the design is just too old.
