Ok, how does one remove the elecric aerial ?

Just waiting for my Haynes manual to arrive.. :D

Also does anyone know how much it should cost to replace the head gasket (I have an oil leak and it could be the head gasket)..

And finally - I broke the cruise control - was working 100% ok, until halfway down the M1 at the weekend - would no longer engage and the stalk has gone kinda floppy - is it a case of just go for replacement stalk from a scrappy ??

thanks in advance..

The arial is easy to remove depending if you want to remove the whole assembly or just the mast.

The head gasket is an expensive job so depending on mileage, once you have the head off, you may as well get it skimmed, put in new valves, guides and seals etc and recondition the head. A rough guide price is about £900 all in depending on your location.

As for your cruise stalk... shame you just missed this. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2470772694&category=10398

Suggest you try one of the MB breakers like Merkman or something.

Thanks for the info Spike

The aerial has siezed so I'm not sure if I can get away with just the mast (unit doesn't make any sounds at all)

I was quoted £800 for headgasket so about right.

I don't think I need new valves etc has car has only done 82k miles :?:

Yup I'll source a secondhand stalk I guess..

thanks

If the oil is only weeping on the outside of the engine with no water contamination, then it is quite common on these engines. I suggest you leave it for a while to see if it gets any worse. You might find it remains the same for years.

To remove the whole mast then take off the outer rubber cover and undo the bolt. then go into your boot and remove the side trim to get to the motor. from recollection, I believe it is held in place by a couple of bolts. Undo them and slide it down and out from the inside.

Replacement units can be picked up at German and Swedish or Eurocarparts for about £40.

oil leak not likely to be head gasket

These engines can have oil leaks from several places . Mine has two from the timing chain cover. This is common and with a drip tray can be tolerated for years without it getting worse. If its the head gasket its likely to be more dramatic due to the pressure. To check look at the underside of the oil cap and see if there is any evidence of water contamination which would suggest head gasket problem.

I am hanging on for as long as possible.
