300SE Heater

I have a 1986 300SE, the heater is playing up, it is either on or off and even when it is on it will suddenly blow cold, when i press the air re-cycling button it heats up, there does not appear to be any middle ground.

On some models there is a temperature sensor for cabin air next to the mirror, this has an aspirator fan either behind it or connected by a tube down the LHS pillar to behind the glove box, the little grile to the left of the mirror should hold a small piece of paper by vacuum if the pump/fan is OK.
