Hi all, bit of a strange one last night. Pulling up to a set of traffic lights the car inexplicably cut out and refused to start.

Eventually managed to get her started but she was misifiring all over the place and sounded like she was pinking while trying to start.

The idle was very erratic, but would rev happily at 2-3000rpm unloaded. As soon as you engage drive and place the engine under load she would start to misfire and stall again.

Fuel pump is running ok.

Any suggestions?

This may be curtains for the old girl :(

There is nothing on this car that spells the end.

I would go for electrics the coil breaking down, dizy cap or rotor arm.

If it can rev, not under load, then fuel should be OK, and a weak spark could cause your fault

Changed the spark plugs, rotor arm and cap and she started ok and ran well for a week, but now the spluttering has returned. I am now going to replace the coil and see where that leads me.

Does anyone know if the correct part number for the coil is 000 158 61 03? The old part number I have is 000 158 54 03.

The plug leads might be breaking down internally-worth replacing even if they look OK.

Those guys at Inchcape are fantastic, ordered the replacement coil yesterday at 1430 and it landed on my doorstep this morning at 0945. What a very efficent service!

Anyway, I've fitted the new coil and she runs like a dream now, it's even cured her slightly lump idle when hot.

I'll shall be popping along to GSF to get a refund on their 'pattern' coil which is made by Facet. Not a very good part which is mounted differently, and the neck for the HT lead was far too tall. Dissapointed!

But, my 300SE lives to fight another day, so I'm happy for now!
