A while back I asked the following: "When I am accelerating my 1988 300SL(107) between 50-60 MPH I feel a vibration which I think is coming from my driveshaft. It disappears when I reach 60 MPH". I have asked a reliable mechanic to check the driveshaft and the engine mountings and he tells me they are perfect. The problem is still there and appears everytime I reach 50MPH and disappears again at 60 MPH. Please help.

steering damper?

Hi,

I had this problem on my 1994 E320 and you'll find other threads that discuss this. For my car it was the a part called the steering wheel damper(?).

Folks,

The vibration is coming from under the driver's seat and I am going to get the wheels balanced a.s.a.p.
If this does not work, I will have to get the drive shaft re-examined.

Regards,

Greg.

Balance all of the wheels first, you can get a vibration that only occurs at certain speeds. I would tak a close look after the wheels are done to see if there is any other problem such as wheel bearings.

tyres?

I know this sounds crazy but my 124 developed a real shake at lower speeds that disappeared on the motorway. I got wheel balance checked, bearings suspension - all fine. The tyres were quite well worn but just legal so I decided to get them renewed - guess what the wobble vanished!

The tyres had no damage I could see but just went wobbly on me. I got the tracking all checked just to make sure.

Just thought this might help , daft though it seems

Indeed it could well be a tyre. I had the same on one of my old cars.

but i also had a simaler problem on my 190. That turned out to be the rear propshaft bush.

I have had all the tyres balanced and the tyres look good but there is still a vibration.
I will have to get the drive shaft checked fully.

Hi Greg,

I have exactly the same problem with my 500 SL.
Again my rear tyres are just legal so I'll have to change them soon.

Let me know if you have any results

Hi there,

Have you had any luck with finding the problem?

Just had my rear tyres changed and the vibration seems to have disapeared...thank god!

I've been reading in other forums that also the front supension bushes and the engine mounts can also be a cause of vibration at certain speeds at least with the 129 series SL.

Good luck

Hi Folks,

I got the vibration problem fixed at last, it was the propshaft coupling. Sean Murphy of Greenmount Motors, Harold's Cross, sorted the problem at a very reasonable rate.
Thanks for all your help,

Greg.
