Your central locking system and headlight height adjustment is controlled by a vacuum system served by a vacuum pump under the right rear seat. You should be able to hear the pump run for a few seconds after turning on the ignition, if not check all your fuses .The cartridge fuses fitted to you car are a known weak point ,so remove the fuses in turn and clean the contact points.
Check here for vacuum system diagrams, http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb1.asp?TP=1&F=124190_506&M=603.912&GA=722.415&GM=717.430& .
Hope this is some help, come back if you need more help.

bit more complicated

well the car was originaly a 84 280te there is a vacumb tube that goes into the bonnet but goes no wherebut i think it has been disconected becuse it was stopping the engine stop working as it barely does now. have since tried manuly sucking on the tube and you can get the doors to unlock but not lock. whould the deisel have normaly been fitted with a seperate pump? the engine has a vacumb pump (piston type i think). I now suspect that the pump need a refurb and there is a leak in the locking. do you know of any quick ways to test. I have thaught about turning the check vave round and blowing smoke through the system. What do you think to my analasys? any further tips. thanks

Andy,
I think I have got this right, you have a 300Td motor in a W123/280te chassis.
From the vacuum diagrams it seems the 280te chassis does not have a vacuum pump and relies on manifold depression to evacuate the vacuum reservoir for central locking and other systems on this car . Whereas the 300Td would have an engine driven vacuum pump to run the brake booster and an electric vacuum pump to provide for all other vacuum systems. Therefore as you don't have the electric pump I can't see how you can operate the central locking and light height adjustment.
Sorry, Geo.
