Hi all, I've got a 1983 300TD with 180,000. The car generally runs beautifully, but over the last few days it sounds as if I have a huge growling bear roaring and knocking in the rear end of the wagon. It seems to be worse when I'm idling -- as if the sound were over and above the idling (which sounds find in the front of the car near the drivers seat).

Any thoughts??? I love this old card and hope it's not something terminal!

Thanks! :?:

it could be something as simple as an exhaust rubber that has fell off causing it to vibrate against the bodywork.

Get it checked out at your local exhaust centre - cost = pennies.

the fact that it's apparent whilst the vehicle is stationary points at th exhaust or the gearbox, if it's at the rear of the car that should effectively rule out the gear box.
