Just been thinking when I needed a LHD back in 85 I saw one or two 300TDT cars based on the 123. I saw some in spain and Sweden but never in the UK.were they ever imported or sold here.

Mercedes 300tdt . These were only offered LHD on the continent and other similar markets. I heard elsewhere because the steering gubbins for RHD cars would have got in the way of the turbo bits.
I briefly considered buying one of these in Germany and bringing it back, but decided that a plain 300td RHD would be easier to sell on than an LHD version.
I believe www.autoscout24.de or www.mobile.de are the places to look for these. I seem to remember there was a dealer in Hamburg specialising in these cars...though prices were not cheap.
If you do alot of miles on the continent then it may be viable provided you don't mind the hassle of trying to sell on an LHD car in the UK. Certainly you will have much more choice because the E300td W124's are very very scarce.
Personally, I have driven RHD to Russia and back - a mere 6,000 miles return trip - and I didn't really notice I was in an RHD car. Sometimes trying to overtake in a queu of traffic behind a truck on a busy road, there are disadvantages, but in general roads aren't snarled up in scandinavia so not a problem for me.
