Hi All
I am a newbie to this forums and to mercs
I have bought a 02 plate 311cdi (cheap)with a bad engine noise and vibration when reved up in netural. Its done 225k,
It sounds like the crankshaft bearing or big ends.
Anyway while we were trying to find where the noise was comming from the engine decided to seize up.(oil and filter changed first)
Now to my question....When these engine seize on the crankshaft or big ends are the repairable by replacing just the shells or as anyone done this, or am I talking engine out and full overhall.
Any ideas please
Ta Jeff

you will need to strip it down to find out how bad the damage is & what went wrong and you will have a better idea of the needed repairs or replace

In general if an engine seizes on the big ends then its normally a crankshaft reground and new shells..its possible the guy who sold you the noisy engine tried the quick fix..

Is the engine seized? You talk about turning it over, vibrations and knocking noise sounds to me like a crankshaft puly collapsing, front of the engine, the belt runs on it, not uncommon.
