312D Head torque

Does anyone have the torque setting for the head bolts on a 312D sprinter engine . Is this done in 1 or more stages? Help Im desparate

thats the same engine as the E300D - try a search on that?

if no luck, i have the manual for it (the 14 quid ones on ebay) - which may well have the figues in it - but its in the van, which is miles away...

It is done in stages with a dial gauge....

assuming that your engine number is 601.642 / 970 or 943 or 602.980

then:-
m10 bolts - 10Nm first stage
then 35 Nm
then 90 degrees,
then 90 degrees again

this is from the merc WIS system

Yours is definately not the same engine as a 300d, a 300 d is a six pot, yours is the 5 pot 602 engine the tighten down proccess is quite complicated, as the man said try e-bay,Sprinter, i got a crude manual for £13 Roy

Thanks everyone for your help. I have a manual on its way from ebay. If its that complicated I,d better read up on it .

Be careful with that manual... I followed the torque settings in it for injector bolts and it is wrong- sheared one off & it took me over 3 hours to get the remains out. I checked with my MB dealer when I picked up the new bolt & the setting should be about two thirds of what that manual said.

Just a tip, what I tend to do with my vans is DO NOT ASK AT THE FRONT DESK OF THE MERC DEALERS, they will tell you nothing, try and ask one of the fitters, when there on walkabout ! most will tell you what you want to know regarding doing jobs, or settings.

When they see me they say "Here he comes again", and laugh, but as long as I find out what I want, no worries ! Sorry but £65 per hour hurts me !
