Right, you have the 722.6 box.

My money would still be on the speed sensor in the box. The gearbox does not have to be removed, but the sump/ valve body does.

Parts are about £140 + oil.

Taking to a merc specialist will determine whether this is the fault, buying a code reader from ebay may tell you the answer, but for simplicity, go to an indie, not a job I'd like to undertake without the use of a ramp.

Olly @ PCS in Southsea comes highly recommended, (the nearest one to you I can think of), or Colin + Dave at MBS in Southampton.

Thanks Guy's,

That's excellent info.

I will attempt it myself, I have ramps in my workshop.

Only thing i dont have is the diagnostics for MB. I have approx £40k worth of diagnostics for land rovers & range rovers right up to 2009.

Black C55,

If i get myself into difficulties, I will contact you.

Thanks for all your knowledge guy's.

Right chaps,

I've got the sump & solinoid block out. No it's just nicw & shiny underneath the gearbox.

One question guy's, Is the part i need to replace attached to the solinoid block, ie: the black plastic housing housing the electric socket etc?

When you put it back together, keep a close eye on the elecrtical connector that you have unplugged on the outside of the box. You may want to get a new seal as this is a weakspot on this box, and can leak if disturbed (as you have done).

Got it all back together, including the plug/socket.

Now, do i need to clear the ecu as the gearbox is still in limp mode?
