kia cerato, sorry, but will be a mercedes
while not trying to limit my choice of car to a 320, would there be much of a difference between it and the 230 k engines, etc, for just every day driving, no motorway stuff etc, and prob about 4 k miles a year? as the 320 is the only one ive driven so far,
thanks , george.

Economy wise I doubt there would be very much in it at all, if you're just looking at 4K miles why not buy a 500?
320 has more plugs to change but doesn't have a supercharger so no issues with that.

Are you talking 320 diesel or petrol and in which model?

First glance, if you only do a small mileage and mainly local with no motorway driving, then any of the Mercedes engines will be ample. (They all do well over 100 mph). I assume most of your local driving will be in speed-limited areas?

Well the 320 engine is a very smooth engine. The 230K is a 4 cylinder engine with forced induction so power delivery is very raw and rough compared to the smooth delivery the 320 6 cylinder 320 engine will give. I would say the 230K engined cars are more fun to drive because of their pokey nature and low end torque.

They both are completely different to be honest in terms of smoothness and power delivery but both are very nice bulletproof engines, it all depends at what you are looking for really.

A 500 on the other hand, once you try a v8, there will be no going back...

But who wants 5 litres to potter about locally and for only 4k miles per year?

Judging by how many there are on the forum quite a few people. A 500 makes sense over 4K miles because the economy hardly comes into the equation.
I could have bought a CL500 for the same money as my E320CDI, however because of the high mileage I'm covering the CL500 worked out at twice the price to run. If I was covering significantly less miles then the difference would be a great deal less making the CL a much better proposition and a viable alternative.

I do.

All of this makes me lust for a 500 but the 320 is running so well I expect I'll keep it for years.

I bought my CLK430 Cab with the intention of only doing 4-5K/yr, but like it so much I am doing closer to 10K. Suppose it saves on wear and tear on my Jag though. Once you try the V8 (430,500, 55) you will not want anything else.

Good to see that your passion for cars has been upgraded to lust Peter.

As for Blobcat's note - the V8 500 is a wonderful engine and surprisingly it does not use much more fuel than the smaller capacities, and possibly no more at all if they try to keep up.

The 320 CDI is certainly the engine for the higher mileage motorist. Mt S 320 has now eased up to an all over average of 40.2 mpg (brim to brim) for the 26,000 miles for which I have had it.
