Can anybody throw any light on where the starter is located. When I turn the key all I get is a click and it is sitting in my drive so I will have to try and investigate this where it sits. I was beginning to think it was the battery but it seems to be ok, the ignition lights don't even dim when I attempt to start the car. regards AA

Lift the cover on the N/S, will have a air-con sticker on it, 4 screws, inside there your find a purple lead, theres only the one, thats the feed for the starter, stick 12 volts down there and see if the starter spins!!

Access can be got through the wheel arch liner panel to get to the end of the starter to check the connections.

There should be 12v when you turn the key to start and 12v all times on the fat large cable

On the W210 320 CDi you only have to turn the key once and then let go. The engine will crank without having to keep the key turned/held. There must be other electronics which keep the starter engaged until a certain engine RPM is achieved.

Hi, took the cover of where it says air con but could find no purple wire, plenty of control boxes but no purple wire. however I decided to try a jump start from my battery pack and low and behold the starter sprang into life. It was not fully charged so did not start the engine but it came close. I have put the battery on charge but I must try and get to the bottom of this. Something must be draining the battery or the battery is US. It is a varta battery and I have had it checked by a varta dealer and it came up ok so I will have to disconnect it and leave it for a few days once I get it fully charged. regards AA

had same thing recently on 210 e220 cdi.

turn key...click...no starter...no dimming of lights.

the prob got progressively worse over 1000 or so miles starting off as intermittant fault.

new battery helped for short while but then back to the same thing until one day miles from home and no start at all.

removed starter and put power from slave battery direct to motor terminal....it span every time.

when trying to power up via solenoid no go.

new exchange starter from gsf £70 ish all sorted now.

I have charged the battery and car starts fine. I got a friend to check with a meter and it would appear that there is a drain of .079 of an amp for about a minute after the car has stopped and then the drain drops to.017 which is not anywhere near enough to flatten a 100AH battery in 4 days. we tried this about 4 times and each time it was near enough the same result. It looks like I will have to get the battery tested again. AA

The battery has a 4 year warranty and is only 2 years old but I have had it checked by a varta dealer and it says battery is OK. AA
