My 320CE seems to be stalling a lot. The revs seem to go up a down a lot and sometimes the car will stall. I don't have any problems when moving.

I opened the bonnet and heard a funny noise, from under the manifold, which coincided with the revs dropping. Once the noise stopped, the car ran smoothly again.

Anybody any idea what it might be?

difficult to say without knowing what the noise sounded like , could be just the amplification of the fault through the manifold , im guessing from the limited info youve written its either an injector fault or fuel pressure and the noise you can hear is from the fuel rail. again i cant be sure with out much more info or actually seeing/hearing it myself.

The noise is hard to describe, it's a bit like a machine gun. It sounds like a cog jumping teeth.

It doesn't sound like the fuel rail as it's coming from lower down.

Wandering idle speed is a classic symptom of air leaks into the manifold....

It's quick and cheap to check for these...there's loads of vacuum operated devices hung off the manifold, any one could have split or fallen off.....

Also, the idle speed controller is worth cleaning with some aggressive carb-cleaner (like Comma) in case it has become sticky in operation.
