I have a unusual problem on my 95 320sl,
The Automatic Transmission is perfect ! It shifts perfect, it drives perfect,
it's absolutely perfect.

My problem is the trans fluid is a little bit low and I want to top it up.
Now on every auto box I've had in the past the fluid has been red, on my 320 it's a beautiful gold almost clear colour.

It's not brown, it's not burnt, it does not smell and it's definately not red !

I have spoke to a couple of Merc agents and they say there stuff is red,
well mines not and has it has done thousands of miles with gold stuff in and it works perfectly, I can't believe it's the wrong stuff, so what the hell is it !

As you may tell I am getting a little frustrated, as everybody keeps telling me it should be red, I know it should be red ! unfortunately it's a lovely clean golden colour,

Any help would be appreciated in identifying what gold trans fluid is used in Mercs,

Thanks, Des

My garage uses castrol oil. ATF is red, and the later boxes use the gold stuff - transmax.

Just put in the correct fluid to top it up.. if the car has been over 50k miles why not change it along with the filter

Thanks for the advice, everyone

I've decided to change the fluid and filter. I've not done this on a 320sl before.
I believe that there is a drain plug in the sump and one in the converter.

I guess I have to rotate the engine by hand to gain access to the convertor
drain plug. When I've dropped the trans sump how easy is it to replace the filter. I guess I will need a new gasket as well as the trans filter.

where would you recomend for parts and what is the correct fluid for a 95 320sl,
and what sort of capacity ?

Any tips or advice on this would be most helpful ,

thanks, Des

The gearboxes have different numbers depending on the car they are used in.. they are all 722. boxes, the one in your car is the 722.507
