A friend of mine was recently offered a T Reg ( 1978 :?: ) 380SL (AMG :?:) It has around 90000 miles on the clock but looks in reasonable condition - He asked me to do a bit of research on what price would be reasonable for this car, however as yet I can't unearth anything about it (I can only find refs to 380SL from 1980 onwards - is that in itself something to worry about :?: ) ... Can anyone help me out here with the following info:

>Price Guidance
>Any big issues with this model
>Rough performance figures
>Rough fuel economy figures
>Approximate insurance costs/insurance group
>Is the AMG designation just a bodykit or does it involve anything else - if so what?
Cheers :)

You are correct, the 380SL only came into production in 1980. Prior to that, the smaller of the V8s was the 350SL. So that's a mystery then. Maybe AMG made a bored out version of the 350 (no idea on that) or the car has had its engine replaced.

Performance for the 380 is quoted as 0-60 in 9.1s, top speed 126mph. As for price, I would want to find out what the car really is before even contemplating buying it. If you can get the VIN (plate on rail above grille), an MB dealer can find out the car's original details, including options.
