Evening all.

Just curious what user experiences are of the above please.

Have any significant weaknesses cropped up (eg M156 head bolts) that are worth keeping an eye on?

We look after a few, have swapped a few for failure (normally crash damage/oil starvation), front end is hard to work on as its all mushed together in front of the belt train. Core engines are reliable!

If you meant the M177 engine Guy, as in the latest AMG models I personally think it's the best they've made for an awful long time.

I first experienced one in a W213 E63s which I owned for a couple of years. Smoother, quieter and quicker than my previous M157 5.5 Bi Turbo, also quite a bit better on fuel, not that this really matters with an AMG I suppose. I'm now running another one in my C217 and again, still well impressed with it. Over 600bhp from the factory and silky smooth with effortless performance.

I'm not aware of any known faults with them as yet, though I'm sure it would be all over the forums if there were anything serious. I'd certainly have another if I were thinking of changing but I doubt that will be happening anytime soon. :)

Perfect! Thank you all! (I will have a follow of that link in a mo @anyweb!)

From what I've watched & read, they certainly seem to be a half decent design.

Mustn't. Do. Man-maths.

I look after half a dozen at least with the m177. So far nothing major to report. Early cars can throw a misfire code for 1 and 6 on a cold start. A software update will fix that. Occasional coil pack failure. If changing the air filters be VERY careful with the little rubber sleeve that connects the airbox to the turbo, particularly the one on the left had side of the car. You can easily get the rubber lipped in at the turbo end. It’ll destroy the turbo at least and the engine at most. Change the coolant regularly if you want to be able to replace the thermostat easily at any point in the future. They can corrode in place and be troublesome to remove. Otherwise it’s one of the most exciting engines Mercedes have ever made. Absolute masterpiece

One of the execs at work has a Scoop and an Aston Martin with that engine, he says they are excellent,

Tasos Moschatos is an engineer based in the UAE - He appears to specialise in AMG engines, and given his location, I bet he sees a lot of them..

I just looked him up there and I see him talking about the thermostat issue as indicated by @Uncle Benz

Damn it looks like a gnarly issue.

Recently purchased one in C63 form. All I can say is that the engine is pheonmenal. That didn't surprise me, have been reading about it for years.
What surprised me was the economy. You can genuinely achieve 30mpg on a run.
I would suggest finding one with comprehensive history, which may help give you peace of mind on any major issues. Even better, buy from MB for the warranty.
