Driving through the lanes late last night when the snow was coming down, went accross a junction and our 300te 4matic just lost drive, still engages forward and reverse gears when selected, just not transferred to the road, engine just revs. It was going up a 1-lane uphill, so had to try and roll it back down and it got stuck against the bank, had to hitchhike home which was abit of a miricle as it was the middle of knowhere and picked up our 500sel to try and pull it from the bank and out of the way, which we managed. So its now abandoned in the middle of knowhere, need to wait for the snow to melt to tow it home and investigate the problem that got us stuck! so that was an interesting evening!

I'm guessing the Transfer Box or Gearbox.

I don't know 4x4 off by heart, but a prop shaft would result in reduced power (FWD would work still?)

Transfer box is probably stuffed.

From previous experience, it's not difficult to change.

I think reconditioning is going to be uneconomical.

Maybe the 4-Matic failed and it snapped a rear driveshaft? That'd leave you with a spinning diff and no drive

Well i dont think the front wheels worked anyway, and you could feel it engage gears, so must be prop backwards, did have a quick glance under and couldnt see a snapped driveshaft.. but it was dark, snowing and late at night! Looks like it could be a few days before we can recover it and get it back to investigate though, but i'll post an update when we know
