The MB dealership offered to fix it the non-Mercedes £9,000 recommended way (which is odd considering they are a MB dealership) and for £1,800 which I declined, obviously.

Looking at them pics, i could fix that meself, soldering iron and heat shrink wrap, job done, if you don't feel you can do the job, as I said earlier, an auto electrician, 50 quid, job done.

Firstly you need to establish what the caused the damage, before you make a claim against MB. If you don't know what caused it get an opinion for an auto electrician. You will then be in a much better position to make a claim against MB.
If you cant show its a design fault or find other owners with a similar problem, you will be struggling against MB.
Looking at your pictures I am really struggling to understand how it happened other than rodents.
As others have said if you get nowhere with MB, I am sure a good auto electrician could do the job for about £200 to £300.

Looks like they could have been trapped by something.
That's what I thought but MB dealership have not given me much in the way of an explanation. They seemed more concerned with me paying to have it fixed!

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
4 years from brand new and from a Merc dealership

I was asking because, legally, it's down to the supplying dealer if there's a manufacturing etc defect.

However, agree with other posters - the damage looks most odd, as if it's been caused by some external event. I suppose the technicians disturbed everything though.

Assuming the damage existed before MB got the car? that doesn't look like component failure, rodents used to eat PVC many Years ago but it looks man made to me, I would agree with others and seek advice from a local auto electrician if you don't feel confident in repairing yourself.

I will, once I get the car back which is proving to be another difficulty! I said yesterday I wanted to pick my car up only to receive an email today asking if I wanted to go ahead with the £1,800 fix which I had already said I didn't. I called the dealership and the Service Dept has all gone home until Monday morning! Couldn't be more disappointed in their lack of customer service.

If apart from this, you've enjoyed your Merc, and it's been OK, don't let this put you of another Mercedes.
It's been a good car up to now to be fair. I am more disappointed in the MB dealership really. I took it in under my extended warranty but I now note that they are trying to charge me a diagnostic fee as well as 2 hours labour when figures were never discussed with me.

The school boy round the corner would do that for some extra pocket money, that assumes there isn't any hidden gremlins. Since those cuts look clean enough to be from side cutters I wouldn't think so.

What has happened recently to cause this, you must be aware if you think back some.
I can't see that this is an MB design issue.
And as said the cuts to insulation but not conductors is puzzling.

I hadn't noticed any problem before Wednesday night. I went to close the boot with the red button and it didn't work - the red light wasn't on as it would normally be. I used the foot under the back bumper method and it closed half way and stopped. I close it down but then it wouldn't open at all with any method.
