I have a 1990 410D with fairly sloppy steering, probably a feature I know but I'd like to minimise the play in the steering box if possible, anybody got any info on this ?
This is complicated for owing to the chassis variants, there is nothing in the commercial section that deals with this.
I am not sure if the van has a car type steering box, the VIN number might help sort this.
On the car type boxes, the nut on the end of the box is turned anti clock to take up the play. There are dangers here in the if over tightened the wheel can stick or jam when turned onto full lock.
With car type steering 20 mm is allowed at the steering wheel, but 30mm on commercial boxes.
With the first 6 VIN number I might be able to offer more info
The power steering on these vans have a similar design to the car steering box. But they both look different and are not the same.
Sounds like your steering box is got a lot of play in it.
I will check with my dad as he bought a steering box about 6 years ago to do a conversion on his van. The steering bos has low miles on it. I will see+ if he still has it or not.
