Hi i have a 1989 420sl i have just noticed that rust has started to appear on the rear wheel arches is this a common fault on this model and some say put shiny wheel arch trims. But if i use filler how long will it take for the rust reappear the car is only used in dry weather and is gariged weekly use is 10 miles please advise.
Thanks in advance.

Damian, all the oldies rust eventually. Yours is an 89, and therefore at the end of the queue when it comes to rusting. The only answers are back to bare metal on the whole panel, treat as per the factory rustproofing (which has lasted this long) and respray, or let it get a bit worse and have a new panel put in.
You could of course do the bit which has developed , but it will probably be back within a year or two.
Don't put chrome wheel arches on, as on an older car, all they say is "I'm hiding rust" (on my newer car, they just say I miss all that chrome).
Aside from them looking a bit iffy, they will speed up any rusting that is going on.
What you can do now is remove any rust flakes, rub down lightly with some sandpaper, and paint a bit of rust-stopper on it until you decide what you are going to do.
