No problems with the drive train on my R Class. I would discount the VW due to its automated manual DSG auto gearbox .... but that's just me.:)

Mate of mine has a 2012 Toureg 3lt diesel with 47k miles on it, took it to our local respected German marque specialist this morning for a routine service, discovered leak on camshaft cover which is known to lead to sudden and total oil loss. Apparently a known problem with this engine as VW re-designed the gasket at some point. Long story short, it's prop shaft and gearbox out, turbo off, fuel rail and injectors off, no car for a week as it's 4 days work, and a hefty 4 figure bill. I've suggested he hunt the VW forums to see if anyone has had luck with a goodwill payment from VW, but don't hold out much hope as car was bought second hand but not from VW, and does not AFAIK have a full VW service history.

Touaregs had issues with propshaft bearings - not sure if that's still the case at that vintage.

I don't think the 3ltr diesel has a DSG box. Think it's a torque converter auto - but VAG do use CVTs a fair bit on the smaller models (reknowned for eating clutch packs).

Does a CVT use a clutch pack? When I hear CVT, I automatically think rubber band Daf Variomatic :D

A mate of mine has had a Tuoareg for the last 2 years with no problems.
Lets not pretend 4matics don't have issues.

My XC90 is permanent 4wd and 2.0d pushing out around 240hp and it works well, Volvo have improved their auto box beyond all recognition. Have to say it’s a nice drive. Just wish they had done a 3.0V6 or even IL6, but they have one Diesel engine only in that model. And much as though I’d have liked it the T8 was just a step too far!

I intend to keep my 4Matic for at least 10 years, what issues might I expect?

Russ[/QUOT
I doubt you’ll have any (or any more than any other MB), the 4matic system is proven it’s only just we haven’t had access to it so much in the UK before

personally, id say unless you have the need for a 4x4, buy a decent 2wd car. not only are you reducing weight and therefore fuel consumption and saving on things like RFL but you are also removing a degree of complexity (ie the 4wd system) that needn't be added into the equation if you have no need for it. its the main reason I haven't been running around in old Land Rovers for years!

A lad at work has a V10 Tourarag, and he's has those problems

The V10TDi has numerous problems but when it works it is incredible

I like the Toerag, a friend has a '06 for 6 years and 120k with no issues. Not a DSG box on a '10 plate IIRC

I have no idea but can you guarantee you wont have a problem. All cars are pretty good nowadays if well maintained and looked after.

Some of those V10s have had issues with timing gears wearing and destroying the engine. Sounds almost familiar....
