This is going to get a lot of replies, i think.

Vehicle needs.......
4x4
big enough to tow an ifor williams 506 horse trailer with two horses.
needs to be a vehicle not a hobby ( getting a bit old to do all the work some need)
Not overly complicated
would prefer before 2008 (cheaper road tax)

What i have considered so far....
Landrover Discovery 3, meets all the needs, but worried about all the reports of un reliability, seen loads advertised requiring replacement engines due to crank seizure also very complicated on electronics
Rangerover TD6, same as above except engines are better but let down by gearboxes and again. lots of electronics
Kia Sorento, older versions up to 2009, meets the needs, but again horror stories of engine failure and rust
VW toureg ( think thats how its spelt) again, has the needs but seems not to last
BMWx5 dont like them.

We have at the moment our old trusty ML270, but it cant go on for ever, we have had Discoveries in the past , the TD5 being the best, but tin worm got at it.

Does any own, have owned, know of the above vehilce

I have a RR Vogue 4.4 TDI. 2012 model.
It will pull a house down, but still gives 30+ mpg on a run. Apart from usual servicing, brakes, tyres etc. no real problems.

R Class. Bargain of the 4x4 world as long as you don't need off road style ground clearance.
R320cdi, R350, R350cdi, R500 and R63 are all 4x4. R280 and R300 may be 4x4 but it's not standard. Based on the ML chassis and shares a lot of components.
Max towing 2200kg.
Road tax hurts on all but the R350cdi -they just ache a bit.

The Volkswagon Amarok is quite an impressive tool, my mate has a 2017 with the full fat 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, it’s got 258hp and apparently is the fastest pickup truck on sale in the UK with a claimed top speed of 129 MPH.
Its also got 580Nm of torque so can tow almost anything

Agree. I had the LC200 and a friend had a VW Toureg - we both towed heavy off road caravans around Australia and the VW easily kept up with the LC on the paved roads. Wasn’t as good as the LC off road.

Volvo XC90 could be another contender.
Just watch for injectors and automatic gearbox. The manual box seems trouble free.

Which is hilarious as they’re limited to 60mph on dual carriageways and 50mph on normal roads

Used to have a C63...
I'd still be tempted by the Disco 4, but one that's been maintained by a good Indie, not LR following their absurd Marketing-driven extended maintenance intervals!
