I wonder if anyone has experienced a similar proble on a 5ltr engine/gearbox. I have a 1984 SEC500 Auto which has just developed a whine. The noise follows engine revs but is loudest whilst the engine idles. I have checked all levels on engine and gearbox which appear to be OK. I have disconnected all ancillary drive belts and started engine but the noise remains... any advice would be greatly appreciated as I appear to be chasing rainbows as the noise does not appear to be coming from any specific place. I have tried to track the noise with the hollow tube method to no avail.

500 SEC Whining Noise

tim,
sounds like it may be bearing of some sort, check your starter motor, alternator, power steering pump bearings or try to locate where the noise is coming from.also check your gearbox fluid level.
if all this fails look at the fault diagnosis of a haynes manual if you have one under the section on engine noises. hope this helps-i  drive 1.8litre merc-190e auto
