500sl 107 1982 Fuel gauge problem

My dash and ignition barrel have recently been replaced, everything seems to work except the fuel gauge. The reserve light doesn't work either there is know movement at all on the gauge. Oil pressure works temp gauge etc. Just the fuel gauge. All fuses are ok.
I am not sure where to find fuel sender switch etc. I have recently replaced fuel filter and taken off fuel pump so I know its not in that area.
Also I dont know when the gauge last worked I have recently just acquired the vehicle.

Are there any common faults I should be checking first?

the multi-pin connector to the back of the dash

can be the root of many evils.You need to get the dash out ( steering wheel off) and clean the connectors, and maybe check them for feed with your volt meter/circuit tester.
Basically, everything coming out of the connector goes live sometime, be it with indicators, panel lights, etc., so with a bit of patience and some paper and a pen, you could work out what's what. The only ones which might stump you are the rev counter and speedo, which won't give you a signal without the engine running and the car moving. ( assuming electronic speedo)
You could also test the gauge in the dash by feeding a few volts into the back of the dash side of the connector in turn and seeing what moves.

If the wires are off on the float in the tank, or damaged, this could be the fault, 23 in the link

Any ideas how I get to this fuel float is it accesable under the hood?

Thankyou I have a manual for a 450sl and assumimg the wires are almost the same I have tested them with a volt meter and theres no reading at all. So I am presuming theres nothing wrong with the gauge,but maybe the fuel sender however I dont know how to access this. Is it under the hood at the back because I certainly cant find anything in the boot?

I will try punching in some 107 numbers later just in case something will come up

Are there 3 wires going to the float,,2 for the gauge and 1 for the lamp

I am not sure how many wires there are, because all the wires go into one cluster ring which connects to the back of the instrument panel.
