Hi,

When I accelerate, particularly as the gearbos changes up or kickdown, the revs shoot up and then I get a kick in the back and the wheels spin.  I am not driving like a fool, something is wrong.  Has anyone experienced this and what is the cause?

Thanks.
Dave

If you can (as i dont think you can on all Mercs) check the box fluid level. Lack of ATF can cause all sorts of weird and wonderful problems!!!

The car went into a service at an MB garage today, the computer said it had a gear selector invalid code.  The mechanic rectified it, he said it is fairly routine adjustment, as the engine mounts and gearbox mounts relax as the car gets older.  However the slipping problem still exists and they are still pondering on what is wrong with it!  I mentioned the ATF level, but still no joy and no car!!!

Dave, after reading your first post again, it might be worth have the torque converter checked, it sounds like a similar problem that a friend of mine had on his Rover 827 a while back.

They Garage hooked up their test equipment and sent the results back to Mercedes Central.  They advised that the electronic valve controller in the gearbox is faulty.  Apparently it has gone into 'emergency' mode and jammed in second now!!  I'm glad I wasn't on the way home at 80 when that happened!!! ;-)

The unit was quoted at £320+vat+labour, but the external electronic may be faulty as well but can't tell until the internal one is repaired, they are hoping (for my sake) that the external one is ok, £400+vat if not!

Fortunately thay had another c36 in for a service, they cheekily hooked up their test equipment and took a reading from a perfect working machine to compare with the hairpot results my car gave.

I am now having to try to negotiate my warranty firm to pay out.  The company is WHA, has anyone had dealings with WHA warranties??

Dave.

I don't want to seem as if i'm rubbing salt into your wounds, but my experience with warranty companies, is that everything on the car is covered................. until you try to claim!! sometimes its the way you word things that can make all the difference, read your policy through carefully, all the small print etc before you contact them, be especially aware,  that sometimes you have to contact them before you put the vehicle into the repair shop, for their permission to put it in. A mate of mine fell foul of this a few years ago, he had a problem, booked it into the dealer, they stripped it out and found the fault, when he contacted the warranty firm, they refused point blank to have anything to do with it, saying, "you didn't ask our pemission to have it repaired".

good luck

Warranty companies.....Little good to say about it.

I had already resigned to the fact I would have to payfor the whole repair myself, but in contacting the vendor of the car, they have managed to negotiate a 'good will' contribution from the warranty company.  At  least I can get the repair started now!  I'd better start saving now!!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi all,

Valve bodies common on the later vehicles with electronic boxes. But as I said before with out checking fault codes first you cant say whether its gearbox or traction control as both can cause you the same symptons. As for you warranty company. I have found WHA, so inflexable. If you got a good will jesture then I am afraid you will have to take it. Although I would like to see the policy. As if its one of their top policies. Valves bodies are covered. Need to check with them about the ECU if thats required. Although I thought they were both supplied together as a matched part these days.

I got the car back, all sorted with only the internal control unit replaced.  All's well that ends well, apart from the bill!!  I have to send off the bill to my warranty company, they will, hopefully, send a contribution toward the cost.  I hope that they DO that.

Regards All
