I have a 603.960 in a 124 body. Has 170,000 miles. Compression is 380, 420, 400, 420, 440,420. Timing is set at 15 degrees ATDC. Car has sat for approx. 3 years. Engine is very hard to start. Smokes heavy black smoke and won't idle. Have tried different injection pump, EDS control unit and isolated fuel supply. Whats wrong??????

Your Mercedes
A diesel
I agree with northwest-tech, but you may find a strong dose of injector cleaner and a good thrash are all that is needed.

Northwest, I've since changed injectors. This made no difference. Was able to obtain an idle by taking up all adjustment from both ends of throttle cable, which made car drivible. Took Dieselmans advise and took her out for a good thrashing. Still smoking and starting to get an increase in idle RPM's from 700 to 3000 when sitting. Is something in Electronic Diesel Control causing this? Sensor?
