Where do I start!!!

For the first time and with much shame I have gone and topped up my 2009 E320CDI with 70 litres of BP's Ultimate Unleaded thinking it was Ultimate Diesel.

The tank was practically empty hence filling it up with 70 litres.

As soon as I pulled off the forecourt I could hear a tapping noise from the engine. I stopped 500 yards later realizing what I had done.

The car is on its way to my local dealership and was recovered under MB Mobilio.

What the best and worse case scenario I could be looking at?

Do I empty my ISA tomorrow??

Be prepared for a large invoice. Also MB could refuse to warranty your car through Mobilio.

I agree with this view. I also believe 47p2 is correct and the dealership will not squander the opportunity to "make sure that everything is alright sir".

I once managed to get 50 litres of unleaded into a similar car - filled up the rest with diesel and "drove it off" - with no resultant harm. As you only drove 500 metres, it is hard to imagine that much petrol will have got as far as the engine.

You could stipulate what you would like them to do (empty and flush tank, clean filters, re-assemble and refuel). They might then threaten to void the warranty and the Mobilo Life (but John suggests they may do that anyway).

It is all a matter of how brave you feel.

It certainly should not have done much harm, as part of that distance was covered with diesel in the pipes.

I would also ask for the fuel that comes out to be returned, but what do you use to put 70 liters in, one of their guys will probably use it in their own car

Bearing in mind I only had a drop of diesel left in the car and practically filled the tank up super unleaded do you not think the engine has been contaminated?

My concern is the tapping noise as I left the forecourt.....

The recovery truck driver warned me about unleaded fuel getting in the cylinders and causing damage due to lack of lubrication?

I guess its just a waiting game now - 24hrs - to see what MB Brentford say....

Cant help but worry both financially and the fact that I love my E320CDI Sport - will it ever be the same again??

Father in Law (mechanic) has advised I sell the car soon after repair (panic is setting in!!)

The fuel taken out is perfectly OK for use in a petrol car. its could be worth taking another car down and ask them to put it in that one.

MB Brentford does not have the best name on here, lets hope that they are sensible, and try to be helpful

The lubrication for the high pressure pump is taken from the diesel fuel, petrol has non, but withing that short time no damage should take place.

It does not really need new filters, just emptying out and any garage should have been able to do that, a common thing these days

MB will advise you that they need to change all the components that are connected to the fuel system, e.g. fuel lines, pumps filters at an astronomical cost. I've heard of someone being quoted over £5k for this mistake.

Useful information for anyone who does fill up their tank with the wrong fuel...

Do not call MB. Call your indie or local garage, they will remove the wrong fuel and change the filters. 9 times out of 10 this is all that is required unless you have driven far enough to allow the engine to choke itself with the wrong fuel.

Willow 132 would have come out and fixed it all

Thanks Guys for all your responses.

Any idea what the tapping noise may have been as I left the forecourt?

Would this have been the fuel pump struggling with the unleaded?

I'm guessing that this is very recent so the dealer won't have taken any action yet.

Have the car taken to an Indy, since the consensus is that the warranty is lost anyway you might as well save some pennies and enjoy better service.

OMG.....mine's a 2009 320CDI as well....CLK though not E

Point is what would I do in this situation? What a horrible decision.

I would incline to ask for a system clean out as said previously then you trust to luck. These guys on here know their stuff and I guess that most would gamble small pennies on your car being OK afterwards.

The trouble is you've got a gamble with bigger pennies......but still I would take it. The odds are well in your favour.

Sorry for you, self inflicted problems are the worst.

Very little cleaning out is needed, the 2 product are soluble with each other

My choice would be to replace the fuel and filter, drain the lines and flush the system asap by a 100 mile motorway run.

isnt in the forecourt you cant put a diesel nozzle into an unleaded tank

and the same you can't put an unleaded nozzle into a diesel tank?

Haven't I seen you can put cooking oil in a diesel engine and still run, why cant unleaded petrol run in a diesel engine?
