Hi, My friends 72 280 sel 4.5 eng quit on the expressway. No fuel pump power, pump runs when jumped and fuse is good. My question is where is the fuel pump relay? I can't seem to get any info from dealer or mechanics. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, lacy

If your car is a 126 its in the fuse box and that is the right hand side looking at the front behind the front wheel.

72 280 sel Help!

Hi, How do I find out if it is a 126? Is there a fuse box other than the one inside the car next to the hood release? Thank You

This car isn't a 126, it's either a W108 or W109. Right ?

Used to own a 65 250 SE about 15 years ago, and had fuel pump problems but it was always the fuse. Got the old Haynes manual here, and it only covers the 6 cylinder cars, but I'll have a look.

Typically vague Haynes book just says the relay for the fuel pump is mounted on the side of the engine compartment". And Haynes used a 280SL as a project car for the manual.
Judging by the photograph, it's quite near the coil and in front of the brake servo. I'm assuming your friends car is left hand drive being a 4.5. So, driver's side, looks like small black box nearest to brake fluid resovoir.

Hope that's some help.

Hi, Yes, the Haynes book is useless. I don't have any relays at all on drivers side of engine compartment. I see three tall round relays and a square one on firewall on pass. side. there are 2 tall round relays next to computor box behind passenger headlight. They are all aluminum cases. Could any of these be the fuel pump relay? Thank You

I guess it's cause Haynes have used a 280SL for their book and then again, maybe things did get moved around quite a bit on the V8s. An educated guess would be that it's one of the relays on the firewall. That's where it is on my girlfriends E220, I know totally different car, but maybe there's some consistancy to Mercedes design. 14 years since I owned my 250SE in California, so I can't remember much about it other than being shocked at dealer prices for parts back then.

There is a book called Glenn's Mercedes-Benz repair & tune-up guide (Brooklands), if you can find one, which I always found better than the Haynes Manual, but as it dates from the late 60's, I think it just covers the 6 cylinder cars and the 600.
Good luck.

The relays are where I said before in the fuse box passenger side, one of those is the fuel relay

Hi, This car is a 108 I'm told, I looked at fuse box above hood release and there are just a row of fuses there. On the backside of the fuse cover it says #4 is fuel pump fuse, it is good. There are no visible relays under dash. What am I missing here? any help please. Local mechanics don't want to help much. The mercedes dealer says I can't look at they're manuals cause of a [LIABILITY ISSUE] guess I might strain my eyes looking at there diagrams! HA-HA.Thanks. The car is left hand drive.

Hi, I finally found the fuel pump relay by talking to a guy who has the same car in Calf. He took the time to check out his car. It is under and below the Computor that is located behind the pass. headlight, Thank you all for your input into my problem. lacy :)
