Morning

Had conductor plate changed along with oil / filter + lock up solenoid to resolve harsh cold gear changes which seems to of done the trick.

Its the missus car ( w203 2006) Yesterday she told me that she put the car into reverse and nothing happened, then drive nothing what so ever. She then turned the ignition off then on and everything worked as normal ?

Any thoughts before i take it somewhere for diagnose ?

The fluid is a little on the high side in the box

When the filter was replaced the oil was dark with some very fine black sludge which i have been told for 160k is to be expected ?

Cheers

Gary

Reduce the gearbox fluid level to the correct level first as the cheapest option ?

Having changed the atf in a few auto boxes, the sludge is common.

Are you checking the fluid level when the car is fully up to temp and the engine is running?

Check when hot and reduce as required. Too much oil can be as bad as not enough.

should be checked hot , on level ground , engine running with gearbox in park . You don't feel the rod bottom out , it's the bulge at the top of the plastic section that bottoms out in the base of the dipstick tube .

If the dipstick is the type that shows 12 graduation marks , the "hot" level is between 10-12 , ideally at number 11 .

I had something similar to this on a 203 years ago, it turned out be the battery was on the way out. The battery had enough to start the car but not enough for the electrics in the gearbox. Once started, the battery was charged enough so stopping and starting, reset the box. A new battery and problem solved in my case. How old is the battery????

The battery was replaced approx 1.5 years ago by previous owner who did look after the car

But it is a cheap nasty battery

Maybe the cold weather is making the battery struggle

Will check fluid later

Many thanks

Although atf slightly high needs correcting, I don't think it's at the root of your troubles.
Difficult to say further with so little information, but as said, a weak battery looks possible.

Cold weather hammers batteries, and they are often a neglected under-bonnet item. As a quick check, read the battery voltage with a multimeter before starting the engine. You should get around 12.6 volts. Once started you should then get well over 14 volts (14.7 on a healthy battery). This is not conclusive, but it is a good guide to both the battery and alternator condition. Regular short journeys compound the problem.
