Hi all,

Why do things break in winter!!

I have the dreaded speed sensor fault and need to swap the conductor plate. I have been quoted £450 all in by my local indie but can't help thinking that's a bit steep?
Annoyed as I would do myself for less than £200 and have done one before but I ain't doing myself in this wonderful weather.

Am I being a tight ar@@? Does £450 seem about right?

Anyone local to Chesterfield that you could recommend? TIA

Possibly get it a little cheaper by shopping around, but that figure is par for the course really.
The more important consideration is the competence of the mechanic.
Dirty overalls and grimy fingers do not sit well with autobox internals.

Conductor plate, ATF, filter and maybe electrical plug too. Including labour, the price quoted seems about right. Could you even get the parts for £200?

And how long will it take you in the freezing cold?
Electroplate.
pilot bush too...?
Gasket & filter.
ATF isn’t cheap (£80?) maybe a little more for a complete fluid change.

disposing of old atf - time for trip to dump.

I’d say £450 sounds ok, as you’ll be guaranteed a result.

Sounds like I am being tight then.
Will get it booked in Monday.

Ignition switch will have to wait a while though

That's roughly what we would charge as well.

Old atf?
Goes in a barrel with other used oils. Great for a workshop heater when the weather's cold.

Not allowed to burn it without a waste burning license. In our borough at least. The license is 4k roughly. Instead we must pay for it to be taken away, where it will be burned anyway.

Ironically, I have to go and buy red diesel and run that in the burner....... Lunacy.
Perhaps you could find one of those old Land Rover fuel tanks... the ones split in two with white diesel in the side with the fuel filler in and red diesel (or in your case old engine oil and ATF) in the other side.:D:p

If you don't want to get your hands dirty and freeze your 'nads off then £450 sounds like a bargain. If you want to convince yourself then ask your local Mercedes main dealer for a quote.

We had a customer recently, contact us for this same repair. Their car had been recovered to MB Dartford, who had quoted £1550 to replace the conductor plate.

We had him out of the door, on the same day, with genuine merc parts for less than £450
