What's the likely cause of the 722.6 throwing up an engine management light up. Conductor plate?

You pick!
Could be anything, but doubt it's the gearbox conductor plate. That would also exhibit additional symptoms.
Surest way, which in the end will save both time and expense, is to get the codes read. If the Mil is the only symptom, any generic code reader will help.
If other symptoms show up - get it Star scanned.

Did the E class still have the 722.6 box in 2003? Thought it would be one of the early 722.9 boxes about then.

Yes it's a 722.6.

What additional symptoms would a conductor plate give?

Conductor plates give issues where the box won't change gear and/or has clunky changes.
Engine management light will come on for a whole lot of different engine faults as well.

Hmmm, there are times where it wont immediately change gear, especially when doing a kick down. When it eventually changes gear, the engine management light comes on.

That can equally be lack of engine torque from other issues.
When it's the conductor plate it usually won't change gear at all and will sit in 3rd.

How on earth can you conclude the gearbox is giving you an EML

Well there certainly isn't a lack of torque in this case.

A scan just isn't picking anything up at all sadly.

What are you scanning with?
Most generic scanners won't read anything other than basic codes. There are many codes they won't read and very few will read modules other than the engine ECU (so won't read ABS, gearbox etc).

If it’s the 5g 722.6 the cheapest basic check is to see what the gearbox atf level is . Also when was the last filter and gearbox atf service .
Every 40k miles is recommended

EGR valve will throw a light and code. When my A180 throws a transmission code it doesn't show a MIL light: It just shows "Transmission Fault" in the MFD.
