I'm in two minds about this as I know the car is not worth anything but apart from a gearbox issue is mechanically perfect.
It is a 2002 C240 with 89000 miles.

I have had the ATF replaced when I bought it at around 85k and recently had another issue with slipping/lack of drive.
There were no codes until it slipped enough to generate one which makes me think it is mechanical rather than electronic.

I had the electroplate changed and it worked OK for a couple of months but has now completed lost drive in any gear and I cannot manually select 1-4.

I'm considering asking my indy to remove the gearbox and either have them use someone they trust or I can take it to DDR in Surrey - https://www.ddrsurrey.co.uk/services-offered/mercedes-gearbox-repairs
Does anyone have any experience of them?

Any ideas on price for this?
I'm thinking £350-550 for an overhaul but have no idea really and whatever labour the garage charges to remove and refit the gearbox.

Any assistance appreciated.

We pay much more for an overhaul of the box. A Friction and seal set is £200 on its own so I would expect more.

I'd probably risk it on a valve body refresh, unless the fill times are really pointing to a worn clutch (K2?)

Thanks Alex.
Who do you use for gearbox work if I may ask?
I've an upper budget of £1500 to cover it if will resolve the issue.

Prior to this it had intermittently a harsh first gear change when cold which steadily got worse.
It sounds like a pressure issue with a whining sound when the engine is running and occasionally can be coaxed into working and being able to manually select gears.

Is it worth to try getting it up to temp and see if it improves?

Assuming the level is correct, a whining noise usually indicates an issue with the oil pump in the gearbox.

We use Wayne Gates Mercedes for gearbox overhaul. Valve bodies is another story

I had a volvo years ago (20 years ago) it was one of those I think they call it CV boxes. Always died every 4 years and I got rid of the car - albeit a different box type the price then was just short of 1k for a rebuild.

If you are sure its the box, use a gbox specialist that knows mercs or a very good indy to point you in the right direction. A very good indy may well not do gbox rebuilds but outsource anyway.

I'm happy for the indy to decide and I know how busy they are so can assist where I can e.g. if they want me to take the gearbox to the specialist and collect etc I can do this.

How much would a replacement box from a breakers be?
An unknown quantity of course but might be cheap enough (with luck, I‘ve honestly no idea) and if a decent breaker have some guarantee

Finding the right one may be tricky and prices were anywhere around £2-400 when I checked so a non-starter for me.

I found a place fairly close which will remove, refurbish and refit for £2k.

Looking around there is not much available as a replacement as prices have gone a bit silly.
Probably bite the bullet on it....but that is the last time

That is not a bad price all inc. Does it include torque converter?

It’s off to be repaired now.
Probably cost the value of the car.
