I have a 1984 280 sel auto.

The car runs OK generally, but when stopping in traffic, or at traffic lights, the car is stalling. Once stalled, it is taking up to 40 minutes to successfully start the engine again. Does anybody have any idea what may cause this?

I am based in Sheffield, UK. Does anybody know any good Mercedes independent specialists for servicing?

Any help is appreciated.

Regards

Ross

Could be a Fuel Relay, just had mine replaced for about £100 all in. Sounds like it might be or the OVP relay.

or Cap and Rotor.

See your indie..

malcolm, the car drives okay. The stalling only happens in traffic queues or at traffic lights, where the car is stationary. What I dont understand, is why it takes the car a long time to restart, once stalled(around 40 minutes). As you can imagine, a problem like this removes your confidence in a car.

Stalling whilst at Idle can relate to a number of things, try the basic eliminations starting with electrical first, Alt Regulater , Battery Condition , Rotor arm, Dist Cap, Coil, then Check air Filter and air flow channels, - if no luck move onto relays FPR and OVP, these are costly - then theres the Idle control Valve itself, if problem still persistant, fuel pump / fuel filter......

the list goes on - the fault is usually in just one item misbehaving and this sometimes can mean hours of frustration to find which one it is........the methodical approach always works better
