A mate has had this 500sec for a few weeks now, nice car in good nick apart from after the engine gets warm it cuts out and won't start until it cools down.I dare say there is a coolant temp switch on it that is faulty but i have never fiddled with any of these engines so wouldnt know where to look. Can anyone help?

could be coolant temp switch, but could also be the coil breaking down (if its a single coil) or a faulty crankshaft sensor. sorry i cant help with collant temp sensor location. there could be 1 in the radiator and 1 in the cyl. head. sorry i cant be more help.

No crankshaft sensor on this one, but could be the coil, though they break down on a time scale rather than engine hot, first thing to do is to check for a spark, next look at the fuel system,,the fuel pump relay is a known issue with these cars

well, got this running last night.Turns out the problem wasn't quite what he had told me.Its been standing ages so think it was just clagged up somewhere.Still sounds like it is only running on about 5 cylinders and the idle valve seems to be not working correctly so going to clean that out today. Can anyone tell me what the engine code is for this car? and also a good place to get new spares without getting ripped?he tells me a new dizzy cap is £80 for one of these???

You can buy the spark test from halfords, you get a set of 4 so you can do a few at a time.

To test the idle control valve you put 12 volts on to it briefly and it should buzz

You should clean the airflow plate, and check the spray pattern on the injectors, you do this by bye passing the fuel pump relay to make the pump run all of the time

That's true,no41 is the only one to worry about. There was an SI bulletin about the 'flywheel' distorting & causing running problems, but it was a long time ago & I can't remember the specifics.
