Any info on typical causes of the following would be much appreciated thanks (I'm aware of general causes, I'm after anything model-specific to try first):

1) dark exhaust smoke under acceleration (not clouds, but noticable)
2) inoperative rear electric window
3) sunroof slides, doesn't tilt
4) side dash vents blow hot air, centre only blows cold

Car is 78k miles (genuine), unknown service history, probably ex-London.

1) May just be something as simple as mixture incorrect but best to do a 'compression leakage test' to find out for sure.

2) Could swop motor with other side to see whether motor has gone. I take it both switches for window have been tried?

3) Cant help on this one - sorry

4) That is by design same as on many European cars.silverarrow

Superb reply - thanks very much.

1) Doesn't seem to be a problem once warm - maybe 120 miles on the M4 with redex in the tank did the trick?

2) Yep both switches inoperative. Is the window mechanism cable or lever-based? Is swapping the motor easy(ish) or does it require glass removal etc?

3) No worries - other owners - do ALL sunroofs tilt or maybe some slide only? I can't see any mechanism for tilt.

4) Oh good. Must admit it's quite sensible really.

Thanks again,

Ben.

3) not sure about your sunroof but mine does tilt
and slide.  try pushing the button up for it to tilt and
pull it back to make it slide

4) the cold air though the centre vents stop you from falling asleep during long drives at night zzzzzzzzzz

The tilt option on the roofs was only fitted as standard to later cars.....but it was an option that many dealers included many years before that......as willydog said try pushing the sunroof switch up when its closed to see if it tilts.

As Spike said all 190's blow cold air only from the centre Vents......weird I know...but that's how it is....

silverarrow what year is your car and what engine size?
The later models fitted with cats are set to run ritch when cold to warm up the cat and Oxygen Sensor up to operating temperature.

I know the guys here will hate me for this but if you want 190 specific info try the 190revolution Forum.

It's a May '90 2.0E. Is that late enough to have a (broken) tilt mechanism?

Thanks, Ben.

As far as i'm aware only >91 cars have the Tilt as standard in the Uk.
But A hell Of a lot of cars were fitted with it B4 then......Have you tried it......I didn't realise mine tilted for two weeks after getting the car.
