Need to get rid of my boring diesel eurobox. I am disappointed that after 4 years ownership the thing is now virtually worthless! So have decided that my next car will be interesting and classy. I was initially looking at a 52/03 CLK but have started aiming my research at a 90's SL (probably a 320). I average about 20,000 miles a year (all motorway), what are the pitfalls, expected running costs etc going to be over a mundano/astra. Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

fuel.

servicing.

parts.

not pitfalls but all expensive, especially fuel if doing 20k mostly motorway.

nothing I gather you didnt expect.

find one with a comprehensive service history - doesnt have to be all main dealer. then you can see whats been done, what you can expect to spend on parts and servicing and what has been replaced - should give you a good idea as to overall mechanical condition.

Fuel costs are not "too" much of a problem as I get a reasonable mileage allowance. I was working my calculations out on achieving approx 30-32 mpg (as stated in the SL320 specs), is this acheivable or a pipe dream? Also would use a specialist (actually know of one that offers a unlimited mileage 12 month warranty on their SL's) to maintain. Just need a "warm feeling" before I make the decision!

Pipe dream? I think you'd have to be smoking crack to think you'll get 30-32 mpg as an average... I'd reckon on 18 in town and 22-28 on a run depending on whether it's pipe, pipe & slippers or the full pipe, slippers & trilby hat!

Of course this neglects the fact that every mile will be a pleasure and that the car won't be depreciating. I'd go for it but be very picky about the car, the spec, the colour and the history. Get it right and I think the warm fuzzy feeling won't just be the heated seats
