92 190E 1.8 Stearing Lock/Ignition problem

Hello all, got the above Merc and recently the ignition key will not turn and the stearing lock will not release. Even when the stearing lock is off, the key will not turn. Have tried both keys regular and spare so I guess its the ignition barrel?
Thing is, the RAC guy who rescued me from certain clampage the other day, released the stearing lock which then allowed me to turn the key, which had me puzzled. If the ignition barrel is broken how come I could start the car after rac guy had dealt with the stearing lock?

Guess Im just casting about for any know faults or any knowledge anyone might have on this issue before an expensive trip to the garage.

Or how to remove the damned stearing lock altogether!!!

If you fiddle long enough the lock will usualy turn.
Look around at other postings in the forum, you have a common fault and help is already posted somewhere around here.
There probably is a well worn tumbler in your lock barrel.

The key has to be turned to key 1 to get the barrel out safely as the steering lock has to off, the details are on the forum on how to do it, see if you can find them
