Do a search under wiring harness some of these cars suffer from bad wiring.

Hi, Think you haven't had a response yet as the symptoms you've given and the work thats been done doesn't seem to follow any logical path to a solution. If the battery was losing its charge in a day then it doesn't follow that it was a bad earth but a current drain somewhere.(Assuming the charging system and battery were ok), Sounds like the shop was replacing parts haphazardly hoping for a result!. Seeing that coils , egr valve and ecu have been replaced then suggest you take it to a garage that knows what it is doing to read the codes!. Seeing it runs fine until it is warmed up I would now suspect a sensor, either a coolant temperature sensor or lambda sensor for example giving an incorrect signal to the ecu.

It could well be your air mass sensor, causing it to run rough and causing the smell as its lean or rich.

Is yours the straight or v 6?
