hi everyone, does anyone have any experience on changing the engine crankshaft rear oil seal ? and any tips, eg: does the oil have to be drained ? does the battery need to be disconnected ? any particular care with autobox connections etc. ? any advice much appreciated. herbiemercman.

thankyou malcolm. herbiemercman.

I can give you all of the worksheets on doing this, just ask if you do decide to go ahead.

How much oil is coming out, make sure that the crankcase breather is clear to help stop any crankcase compression

hi malcolm, thanks for your help. i decided to let my friend with my local garage do the job, i am fairly sure the oil leakage is the rear crank oil seal, i cannot find any leaks on sump, sump plug, oil temp sensor etc, so unless there is somthing else at the back of the engine, i don't think so. the car went from one litre every five thousand miles to one litre every 200 miles, i thought oil seals would ware out slowly but i immagine it is possible for the lip on the seal to break away and allow excessive leakage. i have puddles of oil on my driveway and i am not burning oil, no smoke at all. herbiemercman. I think that you have made the right move. If your man needs any info when he is doing the job, you only have to ask Ian

hi malcolm, i just visited my local garage he's a friend of mine, he says when i changed the oil and filter last week i overtightened the filter bowl cap he says 15nm is only hand tight plus a nip and any more can push the large o ring out and it was leaking. he says he is confident that this is the problem and not the rear crank seal as i thought. i have changed the oil and filter many times so you can immagine i found this situation hard to comprehend. i have a lot of respect for my garage friend so i hope he is right, time will tell. ian. herbiemercman. ps: i am now a senior member but i do not know why ?

That makes sense Ian, as we do not get that kind of faults anymore on MBs.

You are a senior member as you have past the 100 post mark, and we get to call you Sir Herbie

i would sooner be 30 ish with what i know now, although i may change my non-de-plume from herbiemercman to sir herbie.you must be well past the 100 threshold on postings and helping members with their problems, so have the mb club considered a super senior class ? to be honest i prefer my original understanding of senior which was based on old age and mech. / electr. experience. otherwise a 20 yr. old could post 100 jokes and be a senior member. ian.
