Hello all.
I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me anything about a slight vibration i've heard today, it came on suddenly twice, and just loud enough for me to hear it, when i put my hand on the gearstick it was vibrating. In a couple of seconds it stopped and the car rolled on as smooth as ever. I have no idea what it could be, and am hoping it's not a sign of something serious. If anyone could tell me anything about this before i ask the mechanics it would be very helpfull.

Or the little green grommet missing from the selector rod.

whoaaa, that was a quick answer, thanks, this place is priceless..:D

Well, when i heard the noise i just knew it was coming from central area so i put my hand on the gearstick and thats where i felt the vibration. Other than that the car was normal

Also i didn't mention, it's an automatic...

Pressumed it was;) Can you "rattle" the gearshift slightly (up & down) if it's in D or N. If it wobbles a bit & makes a metallic noise, the grommet is missing.

When it's in 'D' it's pretty good and firm.. When it's in 'N' it does move back and forth a fair bit with a very slight mettalic rubbing sound.

I've only had the car a few months so im not that familiar with what should and shouldn't be, if you know what i mean. I've never had any problem with the gear changing, it's really smooth, you hardly notice it change gear, so i wouldn't have thought anything was wrong. But as i said it was just today for a couple of seconds on two different occassions, it vibrated. I don't know what could have changed, or how something could suddenly be missing.

Wouldn't it do it all the time if something was missing? or is it something that could be wearing out, making it an intermitant thing.

Sorry, i probably don't make much sense, i'm not mechanically gifted. I appreciate the advice..

Also i just wanted to add, Although the car does change gear beautifully, i've always thought the actual gearstick movement was a bit loud and clunky. I've never been in another E-class of the same model to compare it to so i wouldn't really know what it's supposed to feel like. Just thought that might be important

The actual gearchange would not be effected at all, once in "D", the selector doesn't move again untill you move it. To be honest, the grommet is a bit of a long shot but at about £1 from MB, thought it would be worth a try. It does require the car on a ramp though but it only takes 5 minutes to fit. Where abouts are you?? There are many good independant specialists recommended on this site, who know their Mercs. Someone could point you in the right direction.

Im in cambridge, if you know anyone worth going to in my area i'd love to give them a try, a good FAIR mechanic is like goldust isn't it, especially if they know about Mercedes. I have a good fair mechanic at the moment but unfortunately Mercedes aren't his speciality so i still feel reluctant to let him get involved with my car too much.

I know this message is old, but i couldn't really say for sure what this problem was until i took it to mercedes last week, and i thought it might be useful to just say what it turned out to be, for anyone who might have the same thing happen.
It was apparently something called a 'SEAL RING', and it costs, 98p.
It cost £45 for the mercedes garage to find this and fix it though.
But all in all not a big deal, and nothing to worry about.
