Hi,

I bought my 03 E220 recently and it had steel wheels, so I purchased some standard 5 stud 16" mercedes alloys from ebay.

Aparently they were off an 99 E-class. ( although I'm starting to doubt this now ~)

Took them home and the studs don't fit through the holes !? ( although its a whisker away from going through the holes)

My question is .. If I enlarge the holes slightly .. will the wheels fit?

thanks in advance.

A definite no-no!!!

Don't know about your wheels, but I take it you are aware that wheelstuds are totally different for steels and alloys?

Zod,

Which E-Class do you have? W210 or W211? I thought that the E-Class cam with bolts not studs. There is a difference in the bolts for steel wheels compared to alloys - the alloys wheel bolts are longer. You MUST have the correct length bolts to fit the alloys. Check how much they poke through the steels and then compare with the alloys.
If you can't push the bolt through the hole because it is too small then the alloys are not the correct ones. If they are not the right ones then the bolt seat angle may also be suspect and even if you did ream the holes out the proper bolts might not seat properly.
I'd take the wheels back and ask the vendor to prove they came of the E-Class.

Sorry, slip of the tongue - for wheelstuds read wheelbolts. I thought they were the same and the other kind were wheelnuts.

A lot of MB's went from 12mm to 14mm in 2002 or around then. Big problem to open them up as you need clearence for the wheel brace, and you must paint the inside of the hole otherwise they will soon corrode. MB wheels are hub concentric that means that they are a tight fit on to the center of the hubs and the bolts only hold the wheel against the hub face. The taper is not the same for 12mm and 14mm bolts, I went the other way fitting wheels with 14mm holes to a 12mm hubs. Bolts are available with different tapers and I got mine from Top Gear, standard length is 28mm, the same as from MB. If you examine a wheel bolt the only contact is a thin line around the taper more towards the outside of the hole than the inside they do not make contact over the whole taper. Were the offsets OK for your car, important if you have ESP.

And don't forget if you acquire only 4 alloys and keep a steel wheel as the spare, keep a set of the short bolts in the boot with it. Mistakes have been made fitting steel wheels with long bolts with very expensive results!
