I have 620Nm peak torque in my car - and that figure does not drop below 500Nm from about 1200-4000 rpm.

Why on earth do I need 7 gears (let alone 9)? I'm sure 4 would do!

Then I am lost as to why, if there is a bright side, we never get trouble with the actual gears, just the silly electro plates that I hope have been re designed and valve blocks.

Because more/bigger etc is always seen as a step forwards and if BMW offer 8-speeds and MB 'only 7' then BMW must be better... is how I suspect most people see it, so if MB now have 9-speeds, then for now they must be best.

The ZF 8spd box is supposed to be good and offer tall gearing which is good for the CO2 etc. But so does the 6g box ZF had and it was so smooth and much better shifting than the 7g MB box

Must admit I've heard many times now that the ZF 6 speed was one of the best ever autos. .

I had this box in my BMW 335i. Greatly over-rated.

The 7g box in my current car is significantly better, in my opinion.

I had an X5 4.4 with the box and thought it were good, drove a 730d, 320d and Q7 3.0tdi and S6 V10 with that box and thought it were excellent.

You have the 7g plus which is supposed to be an improvement on the 7g (taller 7th, faster shift times, longer oil change intervals). The 7g (not the plus) is a dreadful box that I endured in my E320cdi for 40k miles and felt jolts in a C320, E500, S350.

I've only been in one 7g car that was ok and that was as a pads anger, I'm sure it'll have jerked if I cared to drive and look out for it.

my boss's RR with 8 speed was one of the first with the 8 speed box and for 6 months we had nothing but trouble with the electronics on it
once sorted out with around 3 updates it was very very good returning 35 mpg on 1 occasion (according to the on board mpg reading & I was driving like miss daisy) on a 4.4 diesel engine
I would expect Mercedes to have tested and ironed out any bugs by the time it is sold in cars but if it is anything close to the ZF box it will be good

The ZF6 box did not seem to be suited to the BMW 335i. There are plenty of complaints on BMW forums about thumps and jerks especially when slowing down to a low speed and then accelerating. Very annoying and seemingly incurable.

The 7g box in my C207 is a pleasure in comparison.

My 7g + box is every bit as good as the 5 speed in my CLK.
Much better fuel consumption as well.

I only had one jerk from it in my X5 4.4i, the older 7g box was far worse, you dodged a bullet by getting a car with the 7g plus which has much less reported faults.

Did you get the software update for yours?

Mercedes knew the really early ones were a pig and sorted it out with an update, required a new Electronic plate depending on the build date.

Sounds to me like ST4 was exceptionally unlucky.... I've not noticed anyone else on here complaining about the 7g box.

I'd be interested to know how I can tell whether I've got the plus version. I seem to recall someone saying it has a column mounted selector? (Which mine isn't).

The steering mounted selector does not mean anything as I have one :D:D

I went out in the V70 today and the blöödy thing would not go into reverse, the windscreen wipers just went barmy instead
