Hi,

This is my first post here.
Recently I've bought a 2001 petrol A160 and intermediately it wont start. It will just make a 'tick' noise. I've noticed this happens when its cold/raining.

But after couple of tries it eventually does starts. No error displayed on the dashboard.

I wonder if its the starter motor or something else.
Any expert opinions please?

Thanks

Hi, Starter motors are very common on the 168 a-classes. If you are getting a click from the starter or relay then the chances are its the starter motor itself.

This is not a diy job, as the engine and subframe must be lowered as to gain acsses to the bolts and connections.

That what I can think of but before I spend £200 on labour and probably £100 on the motor I wanted to be sure. Can it be battery by any chance?

I've said £100 on the motor assuming I can buy one from Salvaged cars, Is that going to be ok?

Thanks

Well check the battery voltage first, if ok then you got to suspect the motor.

The problem with a second hand starter is that it because its a well known fault, it might not last to long anyway. Its a gamble i suppose.

Thanks for the comment.

I tried getting the Used parts center for the starter motor but apparently it seems on A160 there are two types and am not sure which one fits in.

I did try calling the Mercedes parts center with my chasis no but they wont give the part no either!

So it seems I have two options:
a) Buy from Mercedes (£211+VAT=used one or £283+VAT=new)
b) Get the second hand motor (£60) and pray it fits in

Dont forget you are looking at least 3 hours labour to fit, Do that twice and if its the wrong one then it gets even more expensive.
